Curtis Scores Another Soundtrack

The Super Fly soundtrack was a phenomenal success, so it’s no wonder that Curtis Mayfield was tapped again to score another film. Based on the play by Miguel Piñero, Short Eyes (1977) is a gritty prison drama in which Mayfield has a cameo appearance.
Piñero, who cofounded the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, wrote the play while serving time in New York’s Sing Sing Penitentiary in 1972. He would later write the classic Miami Vice episode “Smuggler’s Blues,” which had a guest appearance by Coati Mundi. Miguel Piñero died in New York City in 1988 from cirrhosis of the liver.
