Issue 50 Is Our 10-Year Anniversary!

Prince / Frank Ocean

In December of 2001, Wax Poetics debuted its first issue to a small following of record collectors and “beat diggers.” Ten years later, Wax Poetics has carved out a niche for itself in the world of music journalism and expanded its audience to a worldwide congregation of music lovers.

Issue 50 marks our ten-year anniversary and does so with one of the most iconic musicians in the history of African American music, the one and only Prince.

We’ve also done a full redesign, making the magazine slightly larger—8 x 10.5 inches—and we’ve embraced a new paper stock. Wax Poetics will look a bit different on the newsstand, with a new mark making its debut in place of our old logo, but the magazine will continue to be a collectible objet d’art, something to be saved on your shelf as a musical reference manual, not recycled like other mags.

Wax Poetics has also returned to its roots as a journal and is back to being quarterly. The new price of $11.99 reflects not only radical changes in the publishing industry and the economy, but also the guarantee of continued quality from the paper stock to the writing and photographs. As always, our subscription prices offer a great deal of savings off the cover price.

While we vow to keep Wax Poetics in print as a tangible entity, bucking the trend of ridding our culture of old-school reading products, we will also start offering a digital version of the magazine this year for the iPhone, iPad, Android, and other popular handheld devices.

Issue 50 is on sale now, so please join us as we embark on our tenth year of celebrating the unprecedented and untouchable African American musical tradition!

  4. I need this issue. The only places to buy magazines in my town are walmart, target, walgreens, and rite aid and none of those places carry this magazine. We don’t even have a bookstore anymore…really sad.

  15. Congrats on the 50th issue, not sure I am crazy about the new size format and the new paper stock will have to wait and see, The appeal was that heavy card stock and size make a nice dispay on my shelf since I have every issue. Now I will have to start a new shelf but looking forward to another 50 issues!

  16. A quarterly journal again? So only 4 issues a year? I have every single issue from #1 (winter 2002) – #49. I will always be a heavy WP supporter but this is going to leave me seriously jonesing in between seasons. ):

  17. Unfortunately, there are no savings to be had for a Canadian subscription.

You charge $66 a year for 4 issues.

If I buy it off the news stand for $11.99 – $13.99 plus tax, it would cost me approx. $54 – $63.

  20. I just purchased the wax poetics app for iPad ($9.99) and am getting to see the logo and a “loading please wait” message and nothing more. Is this a known issue / bug? I am a long time fan of the publication and would like to view this on my ipad3 as well. Please advise bc it is not working at present.

  21. You have downloaded the app but have not yet downloaded a magazine. You need to go back to the store and now choose one of the magazines that are available.
