Who is Joni Haastrup? That there are fans of the Afro-rock scene of the ’70s who are still unaware of his major contributions would probably delight the present-day Haastrup—a devout Buddhist for whom humility is a virtue. The Haastrup of the ’70s would likely be confounded. After all, this son of a Yoruban king was the lead vocalist on Orlando Julius Ekemode’s seminal Super Afro Soul LP, considered by many to be the birthplace of the Afrobeat sound (the band also featured a certain Fela Ransome Kuti on trumpet).

By the ’70s, Haastrup was known as “Soul Brother Number One,” a star on the West African music scene. In 1971, he was handpicked by Ginger Baker to tour Europe as part of the Air Force band, and on returning to Nigeria later that year formed the genre-defying MonoMono. The group released two nuanced LPs in 1972 and ’74, albums that have been consistently regarded as centerpieces of any Nigerian collection. In 1978, Haastrup recorded Wake Up Your Mind, a spectacularly soulful, groovy and lyrically inspiring LP that currently fetches hundreds of dollars when an original copy makes an appearance.

Fortunately, there is a way to remedy any unfamiliarity with Joni Haastrup and enjoy his finest creations without breaking the bank. Soundway Records have teamed up with Tummy Touch to reissue the two MonoMono LPs and Joni’s solo gem Wake Up Your Mind.

Wax Poetics is proud to debut a recently discovered outtake from the 1978 sessions, “Imokiraria,” a stripped-down raw funk demo version of Joni’s oft-compiled classic “Greetings.”

San Francisco’s Peek Gallery will be showcasing exclusive photography and short films from Los Angeles–based team Mochilla, June 2-30. Coleman and B+, cofounders of Mochilla, have photographed prolific artists including Lauryn Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, Mulatu Astatke, J Dilla, and EPMD, and will be showcasing some of their artwork in San Francisco this month. The exhibit, entitled “If It Fits in the Backpack: 10 Years on the Road with Mochilla,” will feature a Q&A, film screenings, and guest DJs at the opening ceremony on June 2. Along with still photography, the Mochilla crew also tackles filmmaking and video production, including DJ Shadow’s “High Noon,” Keepintime, Brazilintime, and the Timeless series.

A new exhibit celebrating the work of music photographers Janette Beckman and David Corio, Catch the Beat: the Roots of Punk & Hip Hop, opens at the Morrison Hotel Gallery tonight.

Geographically and culturally separate, the punk and hip-hop counterculture movements were founded on equally subversive, even dangerous, approaches to making music. Both of these historic art forms’ beginnings and progressions have been well documented, and we have the likes of Janette Beckman and David Corio to thank for that. Both of these musical documentarians’ work has been prominently featured in our magazine, each even presenting their own photo essays in issue 25.

New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will be filled with explosive rhythms and sophisticated harmonies, as Larry Harlow takes the stage with Ruben Blades and guest vocalist Adonis Puentes on Saturday. Multi-Grammy-nominated virtuoso drummer Bobby Sanabria’s fierce Big Band serves as the orchestra’s nerve center, as well as opening the night with a hard-swinging set of Afro-Cuban Jazz.

Music begins at 7:30pm, with no entry fee. Hope to see you all there!
