Today is the birthday of one of reggae’s original roots musicians. Burning Spear turns sixty-three today, but he continues to be a vivacious presence in the Rastafari movement. Heavily influenced by Marcus Garvey, many of Burning Spear’s records contained political and philosophical undertones, and his 2009 Grammy-winning record, Jah Is Real, proved that he could create quality records decades into his career. Originally a trio, Burning Spear would record with Jack Ruby and eventually land a deal with Island Records before launching his own label, Spear. Check out the video below to listen to “Marcus Garvey,” a classic Burning Spear track he revisited in the studio.
