East Coast Playa – A sweet soul mixtape selected by the Jack Moves

The Jack Moves is a Newark duo consisting of singer and multi-instrumentalist Zee Desmondes—who has a mean falsetto—and drummer/producer Teddy Powell. The sweet soul group, just signed to Wax Poetics Records, recently dropped their first single, “Doublin’ Down,” whose video can be seen below.

“It started out very much about ‘Let’s try to replicate this old music,’ ” Zee says of their process. “But I think where we’ve arrived at with this [upcoming] album is that we still want to do something new. Because we don’t just love soul music; we love hip-hop, we like rock—so it’s about taking all of those influences and making something unique out of it.”

Some of their sweet soul influences can be heard in their new mixtape, East Coast Playa.

“This mix is made from my 45s and LPs,” says Teddy. “The first half is four-count beats, and the second half is waltzes—a sweet soul masterpiece.”
