The Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr live in Kuwait

Berlin-based Habibi Funk continues to lead the way in re-discovering music from Africa and the Arabic world. Their latest release presents the Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr’s first official reissue of their holy grail album, Jazz, Jazz, Jazz. The original LP has been sold for over $1000 on eBay, but more importantly, the reissue brings new light to a band that has been gravely overlooked when discussing the important players of the ’70s Sudanese jazz/funk scene.

The album ranges from instrumental tracks reminiscent of blaxploitation soundtracks to more Sudanese-rooted songs, a lot of them modernized version of traditional rhythms from the diverse regions of Sudan. Powerful horn arrangements, funky drumming, and Saif Abu Bakr’s vocals create a unique and powerful mixture that is infectious while thought-provoking.

Check out a live performance video of the Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr live in Kuwait.  The band traveled to Kuwait without visas and were subsequently detained.  Through a contact with the Prince of Kuwait, the band was released and was allowed to perform. The video file comes directly from an old VHS tape from the band.

The Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr’s Jazz, Jazz, Jazz is available now from Habibi Funk.
