Wax Poetics print collaboration with iconic New York photographer, Bill Bernstein.

Complimenting his career as a celebrated, award-winning portrait photographer, Bernstein has long nurtured an interest in documenting contemporary “tribes”—subcultures outside the mainstream exemplified by New York City’s late 1970's influential nightlife scene. His black and white photography captures disco at its pinnacle, with images that give us rarely seen glimpses into a world that ranges from Black, gay, and underground culture to the rarified celebrity haven of Studio 54.

Print information:

This striking image captures one of the few female DJs of the era in action. Although there were a handful of notable women disc jocks, the huge majority of record controllers were men, and it was unusual to say the least to see a woman in the booth. Alice Gamret, captured in action by Bernstein, was part of a service that trained and hired out DJs to venues that were not typically dedicated nightclubs, such as this one at Sybil’s, located in a midtown Manhattan hotel. Gamret sadly passed away in late 2022, but was delighted to recently learn of this photo’s existence and the interest it provoked.
